We are 30 years in the making


Founded in 1985, we have grown from a single room in Bournemouth to a network of offices throughout the UK. Through good times and bad, we have developed the intelligence and experience to respond, to evolve and to grow.

To our many clients and staff who have been along with us for the ride - thank you, and here's to the next 30 years!

    The agency was conceived in the Cricketers’ Arms pub in Bournemouth.

  • 1984

    Prince Harry is born and Torvill and Dean win gold in Sarajevo.

  • 1985

    Aylesworth Fleming opens its doors on Poole Hill.

  • 1985

    First UK mobile phone calls are made.

  • 1986

    Diego Maradona scores with the ‘Hand of God’ to knock England out of the World Cup in Mexico.

  • 1986

    Clarke Homes become AF’s first major housebuilder client.

  • 1987

    CALA Homes Western appoints AF (CALA still Emerge Group clients 28 years later).

  • 1987

    Maggie Thatcher wins 3rd term as work starts on the M40.

  • 1988

    Dave Spittles, our longest-serving employee, joins AFL.

  • 1988

    Comic Relief is launched and Piper Alpha explodes in the North Sea leaving 167 dead.

  • 1989

    Sky TV launches and 96 die in the Hillsborough Disaster.

  • 1989

    AF Staff numbers top 20.

  • 1990s

  • 1990

    Iraq invades Kuwait and The Halifax announces the end of house price inflation!

  • 1990

    Clients Grove Personnel and Leading Leisure go bust – AF teeters but survives.

  • 1991

    CALA award AF all English developments – our first £1m win.

  • 1991

    Robert Maxwell goes overboard as the Bank of England announces the recession is over.

  • 1992

    Fire breaks out at Windsor Castle during the Queen’s Annus Horribilis.

  • 1992

    Alfred McAlpine appoint AF UK wide.

  • 1993

    We knock a hole in the wall of 20 Poole Hill and expand into Aardvark House.

  • 1993

    The Mondeo is launched and so is UKIP.

  • 1994

    The first National Lottery draw takes place and the Channel Tunnel opens.

  • 1994

    AF Staff numbers top 20… for the second time!

  • 1995

    AF’s McAlpine campaign wins REGI Award for Best Use of a Large Budget.

  • 1995

    Nick Leeson is jailed and Frank Bruno wins the world title.

  • 1996

    First AF website launched.

  • 1996

    British Rail gets privatised and the Spice Girls have their first hit.

  • 1997

    AF wins DMA Gold Award for Exchange & Mart.

  • 1997

    Tony Blair becomes prime minister and Princess Diana dies in Paris.

  • 1998

    BMW acquires Rolls Royce and the two pound coin is launched.

  • 1998

    AF Staff numbers top 50.

  • 1999

    National minimum wage launched, at £3.60 an hour.

  • 1999

    Matt Fleming gives up smoking.

  • 2000s

  • 2000

    AF sister company Space & Time Media launched.

  • 2000

    The Millennium Dome opens and Wembley Stadium closes.

  • 2001

    AF Turnover tops £5M.

  • 2001

    Foot and Mouth breaks out, the Office is on the telly and the first Harry Potter film opens.

  • 2002

    AF introduce evening shift in studio to meet demand.

  • 2002

    The Queen Mum dies and George Wimpey acquires Alfred McAlpine.

  • 2003

    AF opens additional offices in Bournemouth.

  • 2003

    The Congestion Charge is introduced and the Iraq war breaks out.

  • 2004

    The Gherkin opens in St Mary Axe and Kelly Holmes wins two golds in Athens.

  • 2004

    ZeroFour becomes AF subsidiary.

  • 2005

    George Best dies and the Spinnaker Tower opens in Portsmouth.

  • 2005

    Manchester office established – AF wins Redrow.

  • 2006

    The UK basks in a heat wave as a whale swims up the Thames.

  • 2006

    Edinburgh office established.

  • 2007

    Emerge Group formed.

  • 2007

    Tony Blair hands over to Gordon Brown and Madeleine McCann goes missing.

  • 2008

    It’s the crash and the Government steps in to save Northern Rock.

  • 2008

    AF survives financial crisis - just!

  • 2009

    AF appointed by Linden Homes.

  • 2009

    Lloyds acquire Halifax, RBS announce the biggest corporate loss in British history.

  • 2010s

  • 2010

    East Midlands office established – AF wins Avant (formerly Gladedale).

  • 2010

    The recession ends and we get a coalition government.

  • 2011

    Thinking Juice joins Emerge Group.

  • 2011

    Wills and Kate get married and riots break out across the country.

  • 2012

    The Shard opens in London and it’s the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

  • 2012

    After 27 years on Poole Hill AF moves head office to Holland House.

  • 2013

    Marketing Matters joins forces with AF.

  • 2013

    Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce go to jail and Margaret Thatcher dies.

  • 2014

    Latest AF brand identity and website launched.

  • 2014

    Scotland votes to stay in the Union and Lewis Hamilton wins the world championship.

  • 2015
